Medical treatments
Various medical treatments are available to help reduce acne scars. A dermatologist may recommend different procedures, depending on the person's skin type and the size of the scar.
Medical treatments for acne scars include;
Chemical peeling
A dermatologist can recommend a type of exfoliation suitable for a person's skin type, acne severity, and scarring.
A 2017 review of acne scar treatment cites a study that found that six out of 10 participants who used a specific type of chemical peel called trichloroacetic acid (TCA) had at least a 70 percent improvement in acne scars.
Other chemical peels may be less effective. For example, 25 percent of those who used glycolic acid did not see any reduction in the appearance of scars.
A person may need to try different types of peels to determine which one works for them.
Injections
Corticosteroid injections can help treat acne scar tissue if a person has hypertrophic or keloid scars.
Treatment typically consists of a series of injections. A dermatologist can do these injections every few weeks in his office, watching the results.
Dermal filler
In some cases, dermatologists may recommend using soft tissue fillers to reduce the appearance of scars.
Dermatologists may choose a filler consisting of a collagen-based product, which may require allergy testing. Alternatively, removing fat from another part of the body for use may be an option.
Dermal fillers work best for atrophic scars, but most are temporary. Treatment typically lasts between 6 and 18 months.
However, there are some permanent options that a person can discuss with their dermatologist.
Microneedling
Microneedling is the process of inserting small needles into the skin surrounding the scar to stimulate the body to make more collagen. This collagen can reduce the appearance of acne scars by softening the skin.
In a 2017 review, micro-needling produced a 31 to 62 percent improvement in the appearance of acne scars.
However, microneedling can cause side effects. Many people experience redness, pain, and inflammation after treatment, but these effects subside over time.
laser therapy
Laser therapy rejuvenates the skin without the use of chemicals or scrubs. It removes the top layer of skin to reveal younger skin cells underneath, which can help reduce the appearance of scarring.
Laser therapy is not suitable for everyone. Laser treatment cannot be applied to everyone, as its success mostly depends on the acne scars and skin type that the person has. The treatment may also cause a reaction in some people, especially those with sensitive skin.
